Criminal charges are broken into several distinct categories.
The following are some general descriptions:
- Traffic infractions/misdemeanors
Typically, charges involving death, weapons, violence, identity theft, theft or damage over $500 and drugs will be charged as felonies. These are the charges that can result in prison time.
Domestic violence, lower level thefts, assault, harassment and property damage are charged as misdemeanors. The most serious consequence for misdemeanors is up to two years in county jail, fines and probation.
Traffic offenses rarely result in jail time. However, see our DUI/Driving tab for more information.
